Tasting Notes

Vinous 95

Glass-staining ruby. Pungent, spice- and mineral-accented aromas of ripe dark berries, smoky bacon, candied licorice, violet and Moroccan spices. Juicy and densely packed on the palate, offering impressively concentrated black and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors sharpened by a hint of peppery spices. Becomes sweeter and more lively as it opens up, picking up sexy cola and vanilla nuances. Shows outstanding depth as well as vivacity, finishing sappy and extremely long, with fine-grained tannins adding shape and grip. [Josh Raynolds, 07/01/2017]

Anticipated maturity: 2022-2033

Robert Parker 97-99

Another massive, thick and unctuously textured beauty is the 2012 Cote Rotie la Landonne. Always the most structured and tannic of the three single vineyard releases, in this case, the wine’s wealth of fruit and texture almost completely hide its tannic grip and underlying structure. Offering sensational notes of cassis, caramelized meats, spice box and crushed rocks, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, masses of perfectly ripe tannin and a surprisingly sexy, hard to resist profile. Nevertheless, give it 7-8 years in the cellar and enjoy this beauty through 2047. One of the highlight tastings during my two weeks spent working in the northern Rhône was with Philippe and Marcel Guigal, who in this critic’s opinion, consistently fashion some of the greatest wines in the world. Looking at the 2011 Côte Rôties, which were bottled earlier this year, these are gorgeous wines that show the perfumed, sexy nature of the vintage; yet, they have more density, concentration and depth than just about every other wine from the vintage. Marcel characterized the vintage as charming and elegant, and while they’re insanely good even today, they’ll evolve gracefully and have broad drink windows. The 2012s should be bottled next year and this is another terrific vintage at this estate, which shouldn’t be a shock to anyone who follows the estate. The wines are already expressive, yet have more fat and texture than the 2011s, although maybe not the same level of focus or length. I suspect this is another vintage that will show nicely on release next year and age gracefully, with broad drink windows. The 2013s, in contrast, are inky, masculine, structured and not very much fun to taste at the moment. The extended elevage will help, but these will certainly be longer term prospects that will demand cellaring. [Jeb Dunnuck, 28/09/2017]
