Château Batailley 5ème Cru Classé, Pauillac is classic claret with pedigree and poise, a textbook expression of Pauillac from one of its oldest estates.
In the glass, it opens with signature left-bank aromas: cassis, cedar, cigar box and pencil shavings, layered with dark plum and dried herbs. The palate is structured and poised, medium to full bodied, with blackcurrant fruit at its core, framed by firm but ripe tannins and lifted by bright acidity. A savoury undercurrent of graphite and earth runs through, leading to a long, elegant finish that speaks of Pauillac’s gravelly soils and maritime influence.
This is claret as it should be, classical, restrained yet generous, drinking beautifully with decanting but promising even greater rewards over the next 15 to 20 years. Perfect with roast lamb, rib of beef or simply savoured on its own as an ode to Bordeaux tradition.
