2013 was a watershed vintage for Piedmont and Barolo in particular. Prices in Burgundy had moved in to the stratosphere and many wines lovers looked elsewhere for value. Barolo was a logical place to look. The vineyard classifications, the thin skinned grapes. Best of all, prices remained sensible. Take Marcarini's stunning Brunate for example, the equivalent of a Grand Cru Red Burgundy for a traction of the price.
