Château Talbot is a historic Fourth Growth estate in Saint-Julien, named after the English commander John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury. Its vineyard covers around 110 hectares of prime gravel soils near the Gironde, allowing it to produce wines that balance structure with elegance. The Cordier family has owned the estate since 1918, and under the guidance of Nancy Bignon-Cordier and consultants Stéphane Derenoncourt and Éric Boissenot, Talbot has continued to enhance both quality and precision.
The 2017 vintage was shaped by a cooler growing season and some summer rain, resulting in wines with moderate alcohol, bright acidity and classic left bank balance.
In the glass, it is mid-ruby in colour with aromas of black cherry, bramble, cedar, tobacco leaf and crushed stone. The palate is medium bodied and refined, with juicy dark fruit, fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity and a mineral backbone. The finish is long and savoury, with gentle earthiness and precision.
This is a poised and elegant Saint-Julien, drinking beautifully now with a brief decant but with the capacity to evolve gracefully into the next decade. A classic expression of the appellation’s finesse and charm.
